I did a lot of walking around last weekend and took a trip to the Huntington Botanical Garden/Museum with my friend and his family. Behold!

This is around Jon's and my apartment.

I feel like there are some things that I see in drawings but never in real life. This is one of them. "It looks so much like a drawing!" I think to myself but it's a real thing *__*; Snaaaail!

The botanical was pretty exciting. I want some living rock pets! I miss my Astoria radiator garden!

I put together a poster inspired by the original Russian folk tale that goes to the Korobeiniki song that plays during Tetris. If you know anything of Russian stories then I needn't tell you the nature of the tale's outcome. (I wouldn't say it would beat out Anna Karenina in a showdown exactly but it's not going to leave you with warm and fuzzy feelings.) But let's try to stay positive! After it's debut at Game Over 4, it will be available for purchase along side two other new prints at the Attract Mode store!

A stunning new volume of the aesthetic zine Arabesque is nearing completion! According to its most lovely editor, 'This issue is even longer (running at around 136 pages with 12 of them in colour!!) and ties together the themes of tradition and folktales contrasting with images from the city and film.'

Attract Mode x Babycastles

I had the honor to be asked to do work for Adam Robezzoli and Matt Hawkin's Attract Mode show with Babycastles which had its grand opening last night.

My contribution was painting up an arcade cabinet to accompany the three other existing cabinets. (This is pre spelling correction btw. I should have newer shinier photos that were not taken via phone soon!)

I got to work along side the charming Dave Mauro as we raced the clock to get everything in order for the show!

My warmest thanks to all who came out to the show. I cannot thank those who helped out enough for letting me be a part of this and having the chance to work along side of you!

I had the pleasure of helping out designer Rachel Antonoff with a prop for her 2010 fall collection show at fashion week. The show, Mystery at Lafayette House, pulled inspiration from Nancy Drew and other mystery stories. The bloodhound cut out I made was on the case to sniff out clues and be really cumbersome on the rush hour train that I had to transport it on.

Ahh... I can see day passing as the sun reflects off of the floorboards!

OCTOBER QUEST

September all but flew by and now it's week two of perhaps my very favorite month. Inevitably I will not get to the farmer's market as much as I'd like, nor will I be traveling to CT to see the leaves change at my parents house and, with unfortunate honesty, I foresee my Halloween night plans being anything but planned out. So in attempts to put a bit of scheduled fall fun in my October I've decided to cook up a scheme to keep the creative part of my brain and me moving with the month in hopes that it doesn't fly by without me.

The plan is to watch as many horror/scary/monster movies as I can (keeping it in proportion with regular work output of course) and put out a drawing for each movie that I get through. Good or bad, scary movies have a lot to do with what being shown and not shown. The power of an image (or absence of it in some cases) has to be at it's optimum output for a scary movie to work. Kinda like comics, right? Comics are images and words working together and, obviously, strong images and a strong story make for better comic reading. Okok, so scary movies may not be the best example as far as story telling is concerned, but I'm just talking images right now and this is supposed to be a fun exercise here...

Though I'm super excited to see some creepy movies I might note that while I enjoy watching the genre, I actually scare fairly easily when I'm on my own. The hope is that while watching the movie I will be distracted with drawing but seeing as I'll be viewing these solo in my apartment (my dog is my only roomie...) I may be in for a bit of trouble. Fortunately, abusing my over active imagination works into part two of my plan- resurrecting my dream journal.

Way back when, I used to be semi regular about recording my dreams. There probably the only writing I've ever done that I don't mind rereading once it's down on paper. They're also some of the clearest memories I have which is pretty important to me. Some of the images I can recall still make me feel as sick as when I first saw them in the dream. Ugh. So all of October I'll be writing down as faithfully as I can my dreams every night I can remember them. Perhaps I can use them for future comics or maybe they will just be weird picture regurgitations of my day. Either way, they're something I'd like to keep better track of and now seems a good a time as any.

It is doubtful that I will post my dreams here unless they are particularly noteworthy but I'll be putting up every movie drawing that comes out of my trembling hands for sure!

I was lucky enough to be invited to draw a few illustrations for the Arabesque Zine. A wonderful break from my usual, it was a pleasure to exercise my more feminine side in order to put pictures against a translation, provided by An Nguyen and Bronwyn Thomas, of 'Suzuran- Lilly of the Valley' by Yoshiya Nobuko.
I have yet to receive a hard copy of the zine, but the craft and care that's been applied to its creation is plain enough from the layouts I've seen online. I can't urge you enough to check it out!

Edit note: The book will have its debut at Canzine in Toronto this November 1st.

As a kid I was a big fan of Kipling's Just So Stories but had somehow almost entirely skipped over the Jungle Book stories. So for the exception of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal (thanks Chuck Jones!) I had no idea just how much I was missing. Luckly I am amending this thanks to my handsomely bound street sale dollar copy of all the collected tales.

I can't clearly remember Mowgli's movie incarnation, but I would like to state for the record how completely enamored of his original character I am. I would love to do more drawings from the book after I let it stew in my head for a while and, preferably, while not riding on the train .

In other news, last night after hitting up my older sister's gallery opening for Murakami and my friends book art opening in Brooklyn, I made it to delightfully discounted Fun. show at the Mercury Lounge. I fell into this luck after I did some minor work for fashion designer Rachel Antonoff whose brother and boyfriend are in the band. She is also currently employing my twin as an intern (Kevin Bacon's degree in this is yet to be determined...) ANYWAY. The music is everything their name promises and though the band consists of Jack Antonoff, Andrew Dost and Nate Ruess, I did a small sketch of everyone who was on stage last night.
